Call for guest curator: 25 Years of Wedge

Application deadline: December 29, 2021

On occasion of our twenty-fifth anniversary, Wedge Curatorial Projects (WCP) presents a call for guest curator for 25 years of Wedge: a cross-disciplinary programme inspired by our history of bringing artists together, forgeing and nurturing connections between cultures, places, and identities. This programme’s mandate is to honour historical and future spaces of belonging for Black Canadians.
Wedge’s 25th anniversary will mark our longstanding dedication to the building of critical spaces for viewing, making, and sharing contemporary art. This programme will showcase the multitude of ways that Canadian creators are engaging with and writing personal narratives around Black identity, history, and culture through art and design to contribute to the ongoing conversation around Canadian identity.

WCP seeks a visionary guest curator to craft a project that celebrates various forms of artistic expression. We foresee an exhibition and related programme that will include emerging and mid-career artists from art, design, fashion, music, and performance. The guest curator will impart their own unique artistic, cultural, and political vision.

The year-long programme could include an exhibition of new and commissioned artworks, a keynote speaker series with international guests, educational outreach with secondary and post-secondary students from targeted arts-focused schools and communities, and pop-up art and fashion installations throughout Spring and early Summer 2022. As well, presentations featuring local musicians, DJs, and performance artists may be considered for programmed events.

The programme will be scheduled to intersect with major Toronto art and design events. Since its inception WCP has sought out ways to connect with various artistic communities and nurture long-lasting relationships. Presenting this programme within these networks is in line with the Wedge ethos of support for local communities and will introduce Canadian artistic talent to an international contemporary art audience.
